Stuck on an assessment?

We’ve all been there. The assessment is due, the cursor is blinking, and you have no idea where to start. The good news is that ACU Library has tools for every stage of the process, so let’s go step by step.

Here's my go-to method for tackling assessments, using library tools and resources to help make the process feel less overwhelming.

Unpack the question

Before you write anything, work out what you’re being asked. Highlight the task words (e.g., analyse, compare, evaluate) and the topic. The library’s assessment help resources have guides on breaking down questions.

Find your sources

Head to the library’s advanced search and use keywords for your question. Use the filters for peer-reviewed articles and publication date to narrow things down quickly. Need something specific to your discipline? Check the subject guides, which point you to the best database for your area.

Manage your reading

Once you’ve found a few good papers, tools like EndNote, Zotero and Mendeley help keep your references organised and allow you to access them easily. It's like having a mini library in your laptop that you can use keywords to search through. You can also integrate all three with Word, and the library has handy guides for setting up and using reference managers.

Reference as you go

Check the referencing guides for your style and add citations while you write. It saves a lot of stress later.

Attend a library workshop

The library regularly hosts online workshops and events to better explain research methodologies and tools. Keep an eye on library news or check out the training and events page to find out what’s on. Can’t make it to a session? The training hub has recordings, so you can go at your own pace.

Don’t go it alone

Last but definitely not least, library staff are always happy to help. You can drop by and chat in person if you're on campus or contact the library online through email or chat. You can even book a one-to-one online session and get tailored support from a librarian.

Good luck with your final assessments for this semester!

Meet Renee

Hi! I'm Renee, a fourth-year psychology student currently in the throes of finishing my thesis.

When I’m not deep at work at one of the library monitors, I have the pleasure of clocking in for a shift as a library concierge.

If you see me around come say hi anytime!
