1. ACU Library borrows from other libraries and institutions

ACU Library recognises that it cannot meet every need from its own collection. Specialist research needs may be met through ACU's participation in national and international resource sharing/interlibrary loan programs or from commercial document suppliers. Materials you request via interlibrary loan are usually supplied to you free-of-charge. In some cases, costs may be passed on to the requester.

When borrowing items from other libraries and institutions, ACU Library complies with all applicable Australian and international copyright legislation, as well as any licensing conditions set by the lending library.

1.1 Eligibility

ACU staff and students can request interlibrary loans and document delivery services. ACU alumni, community and reciprocal borrowers are not eligible to use this service.

Anyone with any overdue items or outstanding fines of $10 or more is not eligible.

ACU Library does not provide interlibrary loan services to support the information needs of ACU staff who are enrolled as students in other institutions or for their personal use. In these instances, the staff member should approach their enrolled institution's library for assistance or their local public library.

1.2 Requesting an item

  1. Sign into My Library using your ACU credentials and search for the item you require.
  2. If you are unable to find what you need, click include resources not held by ACU Library to expand your search beyond the ACU Library collection.
  3. From the results, you can select Request it from other libraries. Options for requesting the item will be displayed if you are signed in.
  4. If the resource you require is not appearing in these results, select Request an interlibrary loan.
  5. Request digital interlibrary loans in bulk.
  6. To ensure you experience the best possible service please:
  • provide accurate information about the requested item including title, author, publication date and where possible ISBN or ISSN.
  • supply exact spelling and wording for any items that are not in English, to help us locate the item more quickly.

1.3 Number of interlibrary loans

Eligible patrons as defined under 1.1 may have at any one time:

  • 70 active ILL requests (staff)
  • 30 active ILL requests (students)
  • 200 ILL requests in total in a calendar year.

Your ILL request is considered 'active' until:

  • the item you have borrowed has been returned to the library
  • your ILL request has been closed by the library because it has purchased the item rather than borrowing it
  • the item has been sent to you to keep and there is no need to return it to the lending library (e.g. copy of a journal article).

1.4 Level of service

  • ACU Library uses the core service level
  • We are unable to process RUSH requests
  • Requests for physical items can take 4-6 weeks to arrive

1.5 What can be requested

  • Books
  • Journal articles
  • Book chapters
  • Conference papers
  • Audiovisual resources
  • Theses*

The library will determine the supplier and format of a loan item.

*Theses are often readily available as open access via the degree-granting institutions' digital repository or other dissertation sites. A request for a thesis will be treated either as a purchase for the collection or as a request for a personal copy at the library’s discretion. All queries for a thesis purchase will need to be assessed for availability and/or attached conditions.

1.6 Responsibility for payment

Where ACU Library is responsible for payment of charges associated with interlibrary loans, charges will be met from the Library's Collection Development budget.

The costs of interlibrary loans and use of document supply services are borne by the library within the limits above EXCEPT in the circumstance where:

  • the item requested is for a program or research which has received special funding from within or outside ACU. In this circumstance, the library will charge all associated costs to the requester's relevant (non-library) fund.
  • an interlibrary loan or document supply has been initiated with a third-party supplier by a non-library staff member or student. These costs must be met by the requester.

1.7 Further assistance for ACU staff and students

Please contact the Interlibrary loans team.

2. ACU Library lends to other libraries and institutions

ACU Library operates in accordance with the Australian Interlibrary Resource Sharing (ILRS) Code.

In supplying items to requesting libraries ACU undertakes to provide service at the CORE level and charges the current recommended prices, as specified by ILRS standards.

2.1 Payment methods by requesting libraries

Libraries using Trove Payments Scheme can make ILL and document delivery requests via Trove Partners Resource Sharing Platform. Payment is handled via Trove who will supply a bi-monthly invoice to participating libraries.

By invoice – please send your request to LibILL.Requesting@acu.edu.au.

2.2 Charges for Australian libraries

Core (4 day)

  • $22.40 for copies (electronically delivered)
  • $34.40 for loans (incl. delivery fees)

2.3 Charges for overseas libraries

  • A$25.00 for copies or 1 IFLA voucher

2.4 Thesis requests from other libraries

ACU HDR theses from 1991 onwards are accessible digitally via the ACU research repository, Research Bank. This includes theses currently under embargo at the request of the author.

If you cannot find the thesis on Research Bank, the library may be able to arrange alternate access but as this will be considered a purchase, conditions and charges may apply.

Please direct your query to Library@acu.edu.au.
