OpenAthens is a single sign-on authentication service for accessing electronic resources both on and off campus.

OpenAthens offers a more secure, reliable and flexible service and has replaced our previous system, EZproxy.

When creating links to library resources for use in student units, academic staff must use our OpenAthens link generator. Any existing EZproxy links must also be converted using the generator.

Why would I use it?

If you start your research from a Google search or go to your favourite database or publisher website (for example, Informit or ProQuest), you will be able to sign in with your ACU login directly at the website using OpenAthens authentication.

  • Get around locked articles or paywalls by accessing library-subscribed content.
  • Available anytime, on campus or remotely.
  • Quick and easy to login with your ACU username and password.
  • Authenticate once per session and move seamlessly between library resources (you will need to sign in again if you change browsers, devices or clear your cache/cookies).
  • No user account needed.
  • Free to you (paid for by ACU Library)

What about privacy?

OpenAthens connects with ACU's systems so you can use your ACU username and password to access licensed online resources. OpenAthens allows ACU Library to collect important aggregated usage data on digital materials while ensuring privacy for users.

For more information check the OpenAthens privacy policy.

How do I use it?

On database and publisher websites, look for institutional login options via OpenAthens. The login link could be named Institutional/Organisational Login, OpenAthens, Federation Login, Other Log in/Sign in or similar.

  • Find the site’s Login link.
  • Look for an Institutional login option, and/or OpenAthens (it’s your Federation).
  • Search for Australian Catholic University as your institution/organisation.
  • Sign in using your ACU username and password.
