As a long time ACU student, I’ve always used the library’s resources. Here are my top tips for first year students just getting started.
From my undergrad to my postgrad, ACU Library has been a vital asset in my academic work. However, I find that many students are unaware of how amazing the library is. So here are the top five things I wish I knew about the library when I started out at ACU.
In my first semester of uni, I quickly realised that referencing marks are usually easiest to earn, and the easiest to lose. Having your referencing skills down pat can be the difference between a Distinction and a High Distinction. That’s why I love that the library has prepared a guide for all your referencing needs. Whether I needed to cite an article, a book, or even a PowerPoint, the library’s referencing guide has been mainstay of my uni life.
Since it took a while to adjust to the uni workload in my first year, I commonly fell victim to the monster known as procrastination. One way I managed to tackle this is to romanticise my study experience. ACU library is perfect for this, since you can always find a cute, cosy study spot to help you find your focus. From silent zones to discussion areas, the library always has a spot for you to lock in and get those assignments finished.
During my studies, sometimes I need a bit more privacy due to recording a presentation or watching an online tutorial. Luckily, all ACU libraries offer bookable study rooms that are perfect for working on assignments. Not to mention, they are great for study group moments with your friends.
When I was writing up my first ever lab report, I remember feeling so lost when it came to looking for sources. The assessment help page was such an amazing guide during this time. It helped me understand how to properly plan my research, explore databases, and identify the best sources to use for my report.
From my own experience, the first round of uni exams, can be nerve-wracking. I found that there’sno better way to prepare than practice questions. The library holds onto a selection of past exams, which is amazing for revision. It helped me become familiar with the potential structure of the exam and the types of questions. I highly recommend taking a look!
When I think back on my first year, these are the tips I really wish I knew about when I started out at ACU. Making the most of the library resources and services elevates not only your studies, but your university experience overall.
