Important: AI and copyright laws

Are you aware that AI misuse can lead to copyright infringements? Take a moment to read through what you can and cannot upload into AI.

Materials in your Canvas reading lists and borrowed from ACU library are covered by copyright laws. This means they cannot be uploaded to AI for any purpose, including summarising or data extraction.

Here’s what you need to know

What cannot be uploaded into any AI:

  • Any scans of material (chapters/pages from hardcopy books, images) made available through Canvas in reading lists, or as digitisations from library materials.
  • Any licensed material available through the library (e.g., PDFs of journal articles or eBook chapters) unless the licence conditions on the material give explicit permission for AI use.

At this time, the only materials that can safely be loaded into AI are:

  • Public domain materials (materials where copyright has expired or has been waived),
  • Materials where the copyright owner has given permission for that use, or
  • Materials with the Creative Commons licence CC BY – if the attribution requirement is met.

Check out the library's AI Hub for further information and updates.
