There’s a lot of information out there, and not all of it will help you in your studies. But how can you spot the difference between reliable and questionable content?
Some sources can undermine the strength and accuracy of your research, but you can avoid digital misinformation by using the SIFT method:
• Stop: pause and reflect before accepting information at face value.
• Investigate: assess the source's credibility and potential biases.
• Find: seek out better coverage or more authoritative sources.
• Trace: track claims back to their original context for full understanding.
These simple steps will ensure you’re approaching content critically.
Found a source you’re not sure about? Check in with our librarians through chat, email or by dropping by a campus library.
