View and export an overall report of your impact as an author on a number of different platforms.
These reports generally include your h-index, academic/international collaborations, percentages of your papers that are highly cited or published in top quartile/percentile journals, and your output benchmarked against a regional/global standard (SciVal/InCites).
Use this evidence to support your claims in grant and promotion applications, performance reviews and to promote your research to potential collaborators.
Scopus
Find your author profile in Scopus
- Search by ORCID if your ORCID is up to date with publications or chose Author Name to search by name.
- Click on your name to go to your Scopus profile. If your publications are split across more than one Author ID you can request to merge authors.
Generate a Citation Overview in Scopus
Generate a citation overview from your Scopus author profile or any list of search results in Scopus.
- From your Scopus author profile, Click View Citation Overview to view a summary of your publication track record that includes:
– documents by author
– total citations
– H index
– trend information for documents and citations.
- View your publications by year or by citation order by using the "Sort by" drop down menu.
- Export the information to Excel for deeper analysis.
Analyse your Scopus publications
- Click View in search results format to see list of your publications and a refine results panel on the left-hand side. Use the filter to explore where your collaborators are from, the subject coverage of your publications and other details.
- Click on "Analyze search results" to explore each filter individually.

Web of Science
Create a list of your publications in Web of Science
- Log in to Web of Science using your WoS login or create an account.
- Select the Researchers tab from the search box. Enter your name or alternatively, select author identifiers and enter your ORCID.
- Select your profile from the list of results. Note: You may get more than one result, either because there are other authors with a similar name or because your publications have been split across more than one profile. If more than one profile has your publications, select those that are yours and View as combined record.
Create a Marked List of your Web of Science publications to analyse
Create a Marked List to save records for the duration of your session so you can come back to them.
- Check the boxes for the results you wish to add.
- Click on the Add to Marked List.
- If signed in, select if you wish to add them to an existing list or create a new one.
- To view your Marked List, click on Marked List in the top menu bar.

Create a Citation Report in Web of Science
Learn how to create a citation report (YouTube video) to find your h-index, publishing, and citation trends.
- Generate a citation report from your Marked List.
- Remove any publications that are not required for the analysis. Any changes should be made to the Marked List and saved.
- Sort the publications in the report by citation count in descending order.
- Click on Export Full Report. Specify record range and save records as an Excel file.
Analyse results in Web of Science
Use the Analyze results option to identify the Web of Science categories you are publishing in, authors who you are collaborating with and where your collaborators are from.
- From within a set of search results or your marked list, select the Analyze Results.
- Select a field to analyse. Use the two dropdown menus to change the display to bar graph and the number of results included in the display.
- Download the data for closer analysis in Excel.
Discover who is citing your work
Finding out who is citing your work can provide evidence of research reach.
Scopus
- From within your author profile, click the tab Cited by xx Documents.
- Click View list in search results format.
- Click Analyze search results to explore what authors are citing you and where they are from (institution, country, journal published in).
- Export to Excel for analysis.
Web of Science
- From within a Citation Report, click the Citing Articles number.
- Click Analyze Results to see who cites you the most and where they are from.
Using these metrics you can create a statement such as:
To date, my publications have been cited over 986 times by authors from 28 countries and in three languages (Scopus, 22 August 2022).
Use SciVal or InCites to generate Overview Reports with greater detail
Find a researcher in SciVal
SciVal is an Elsevier product that uses publication data from Scopus. For a researcher to appear in SciVal, they must have publications that are indexed in Scopus.
- Login to SciVal using your Scopus/Elsevier login) or create an account.
- From the welcome page select Overview and click on the Researchers and Groups icon on the left-hand panel
- Select Define a new Researcher:
- From the Search tab enter the name of the researcher.
- Click Search.
- Identify the correct profile from the author list.
- Select validate publications to view a list of your publications, add missing articles, or remove articles that do not belong to you. Click Next Step
- Select Save and finish
- Your researcher profile will now appear in the left panel under Researchers and Groups and display in Overview with your associated metrics.
- Use the Time Frame drop down menu to set the time period of your analysis.
- Filter by Field of Research Code (FOR) to retrieve data relevant to your application.
Key metrics display automatically as a dashboard as per the timeframe you have chosen.
Generate a SciVal Report from a template
Use if:
You want a quick report of your summary metrics and/or benchmarking.
Requires:
- A SciVal login.
- That you are a defined research entity in SciVal. Follow steps 1-11 above (under Find a researcher in SciVal) to define yourself as a research entity.
Procedure:
- Login to SciVal.
- Click on the Reporting module at the top of the page.
- Build a report from a template by choosing the template that aligns with the kind of report you want to create. You can also choose from a list of pre-made templates made by other users from the drop-down menu.
- For this example, Select Templates provided by SciVal.
- Click on Benchmark Tile and select Enriched Benchmark (a pop-up box will appear).
- Click on the dropdown menu to select the entity Researchers, then enter the entity's name, and select it from the names that appear below the search box.
- Check the box next to "Include metrics guidance for each analysis," to include summaries describing the analyses below each graphic in your report. After creating the report, you can edit or delete these summaries. Click Create Report.
Edit a SciVal template report
- Once your report is created, you can edit the:
– date range
– section headings and summaries by clicking on the text.
- Click and drag the sections listed in the column on the right to reorder content or remove an analysis from the report.
- Add an analysis by clicking the plus sign and selecting an analysis if there are any that aren't already in the report.
- Save the report as a:
– living document, which will change as new content enters Scopus
– template to reuse for future reports, or
– snapshot, which means it will stay frozen in time in the form of a PDF.
- Export the report to XLSX, CSV, PDF or DOCX.
Generate a Researcher Report in InCites
Use if:
You want a quick report of your summary metrics and/or benchmarking.
Requires:
- Log in to InCites (using your Web of Science login) or create a Clarivate account.
- Under Reports, select Researcher Report.
- Under Person Name Enter in your ORCID or Researcher ID. Limit your report to the desired date range.
Your Incites Researcher Report has three parts:
- Your Research Output
– Overview
– Research area breakdown and citation impact by research area
– Documents published and citations per year
– Journal impact
- Overview of your international and institutional collaborations.
- Your Most Cited Documents ranked by citation.
Click on the View Data link at the base of a tile to examine the data behind the visualization. Save the report to My Items.
