Explore alternative metrics and esteem measures to uncover evidence of online attention and research quality outside of academia.

Track article-level, online attention to your research with alternative metrics (altmetrics) and uncover the volume and nature of attention to your publications from sources including:

  • references to research in news and other online outlets
  • shares of research on social media
  • use of research in public policy
  • research mentions in post-publication peer review forums.

Altmetrics are meant to compliment, not replace, traditional measures of impact and should be used and presented contextually. Consider where the mentions are, whether the mention is positive or negative and who is the audience being reached.

Tools Use for

Highlighting the full picture of your research and providing evidence of the outreach of a broad range of works (complementary to traditional citations) outside of academia.

Can be applied to articles, books, presentations, videos, source code repositories, web pages, datasets.

Use in research funding and job applications, CVs, promotion applications, collaborations.

Use Altmetric Explorer to explore social media mentions for all publications with authors affiliated with Australian Catholic University, specific authors, faculties, departments, or schools, or subject areas. Altmetric Explorer imports information on Australian Catholic University authors and their publications from Research Bank.

In addition to being cited 23 times (Web of Science, Nov 2021), this 2019 paper has been mentioned in 7 news outlets including Reuters and SBS. It was also cited in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workforce Strategic Framework and Implementation Plan 2021–2031.

Why are altmetrics useful?

Altmetrics provide supplemental metrics that can be used by authors to quantify the influence or impact of their works and go beyond the traditional peer-reviewed journal article to include datasets, software, slides, and figures.

Altmetrics show early signs of potential research impacts long before citations, which can take months or years to accrue.
